While many streets in Barcelona are named after men, there are very few named after women, and those that are tend to be either religious figures or the wives of important men. But this is not unique to Barcelona. Only around 10% of streets and public spaces worldwide are named after women.

In March 2023, Barcelona took a positive step towards addressing gender inequality by renaming 16 streets and squares after important women from various fields. However, even after this change, women-named streets still only account for 8% of all public spaces, with most located outside the city center.

Barcelona’s efforts may seem small, but they highlight the significance of promoting gender equity. If more cities follow their lead and strive for gender balance in the naming of their streets and public spaces, we can send a powerful message to future generations that everyone’s achievements matter, regardless of gender.

in Barcelona...
Only 62.6km are
named after women.
Streets named after
women are
also
about 62 meters
shorter
than streets
named after men.
And most are not
in the city center.

with that?!
